Alozaina & Ronda
Alozaina is a little-known town very close to the Costa del Sol, located in the mountains, just a few kilometers from the coast, a unique, fascinating and unrepeatable landscape. The town is located within the Biosphere Reserve of Sierra de las Nieves, which was declared by Unesco in 1995. Alozaina occupies a privileged watchtower in the Malaga basin, at the foot of the Sierra de las Nieves. Once a Muslim fortress, its center is currently dominated by a church, along with streets and bypasses with the typical architecture of white houses that reflect the long history of the city.
What to visit?
Arco de Alozaina
Built in the mid-20th century at the entrance to the old city, its triple arcade with stone ashlars and horseshoe-shaped arches commemorates the city’s Islamic past.
Iglesia de Santa Ana
The extraordinary architecture of the parish of Santa Ana presides over the old town of Alozain. It was built in 1770 in a classicist baroque style by Felipe Pérez, master of the work of the bishopric of Malaga.
Parque María Sagredo y Castillo
The remains of the ancient medieval castle of Alozaina were transformed in the mid-20th century into an open and landscaped viewpoint, which stands at the foot of the church of Santa Ana. From this viewpoint you can see the Sierra Prieta and the beginning of the Sierra de las Nieves and a beautiful part of the Guadalhorce Valley with the city of Malaga in the background. Nowadays, many local festivals are held.
Torreón de María Sagredo
The old wall that protected the city of Alozaina, which has disappeared but part of the María Sagredo Tower remains, where the structure is made of irregular stone that reminds us of a local heroine who, during the Moorish invasion of the town, defended the town and her act was rewarded by Felipe II.
Calles - La Solana
In this part of the city we can appreciate the architectural layout of the city reminiscent of that of many Andalusian cities with a clear Arabic influence. Its streets are outstanding, labyrinthine and narrow, sometimes dead ends, with small corners full of flowers and eye-catching decorations.
Fuente - Pralnia "El Albar"
It is located at the exit of the municipal area of Alozaina, next to the bed of the Pasadilla stream. It is a medieval fountain, built by the Arabs, which supplied the jinn and a small fortress in the place where the Church is now. The current construction of the ancient remains dates back to 1951. Next to the fountain was built a laundry with twelve sinks, also in 1951, which was used until the 1970s and has now been renovated.
Sierra de las Nieves Biosphere Reserve
located in the region of the same name, is a mountainous and beautiful territory in the heart of the province of Malaga, between the Costa del Sol, Ronda and Malaga. In this diverse natural area there is a nature park and many ecosystems, where highly valued species live, such as the Spanish fir and the mountain goat. The surroundings are full of precipices, caves, ravines, rivers… creating wonderful landscapes. ACTIVE TOURISM is offered here by the SIERRA DE LAS NIEVES ADVENTURE Company: hiking, canyoning, caving, Ferratas, Rappel, archery, multi-tasking, hiking trails and workshops.
"Liquid Gold" - Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Alozaina is the first town in Spain to begin harvesting the green olive known as “El Verdeo”, where the olive is harvested directly from the tree. The carefully hand-selected olives are hand-made in a traditional and natural way. Ardales Olive Oil is produced by generations living among the olive groves of the Guadalteba region, appreciating its fruit, feeling the rhythm that marks the passage of the seasons and the work of the fields, the care of the olive trees and the harvest of the olives. Here, one of the best Extra Virgin Olive Oils is produced under the brand “Aceites de Ardales”.
