City

Cordoba was founded by the Roman Claudius Marcellus in 152 BC. The city reached its artistic and cultural splendor during the Arab occupation (711–1236, when it was retaken by Christian armies) and is unique in the world for its Arab architecture. In the 10th century it was declared the capital of “El Alandalous” and achieved caliphate status in 929 under Abderraman III. The Mosque/Cathedral has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
